“Literate” by S. Pearl Sharp

Written ‘In Synergy’ with “Ways of Knowing” by Isabel Avila

We did library
Monday Thursday
certain like sunrise
the paper card a passport
expire pocket glued to The End
Her in the adult section
me across the hall dodging
Dick and Jane
seeking worlds not harnessed
to Negro and poor
I will come to know my hunger
as ancestral cravings
descendant of limbs severed
for learning to read
each turned page
rattles dry bones
raptures alphabets
