LINEAGE written ‘In Synergy’ with “Moon Tree” by Karen Bagnard
a t r e e falls
torn from the root
wintered, wind-whipped
the scattered leaves, f a m i l y
our fates felled
and shackled
exploited for timber
the outer bark
as is our rough-hewn skin
splintered by the lash
and drained of the sap
blood stains the year rings
we cry out
our crumpled bodies
stripped to the bone
crumble into dust
the salted earth grained with our tears
is sown
their spirits honed and willed
arise, a n c e s t o r s
of a sacred yield
to guide the harried steps
through depth of moonlight
the h(a)unted
wild-eyed
racing toward a scorched sky
north star
like a flaming torch
carrying nothing
but his l i n e a g e
packed in his veins
into the plains of a (broken) promised land
he kneels at the cross(ing)
remembering
his o r i g i n s
descendants
his s e e d spent
son becoming f a t h e r
l e a v e s
